Georgia Jail Mugshots Search Tools

Two state agencies help you find jail mugshots in Georgia. The Georgia Department of Corrections runs a free offender search at its site. It shows booking photos, charges, and sentence details for state prison inmates. County sheriff offices run their own portals for local jail inmates. Some post full rosters with mugshots. Others list names and charges only.

The GDC offender search lets you look up inmates by name, GDC ID, or case number. You can filter by gender, race, age range, and current facility. The GDC direct search form gives the most options for finding jail mugshots in Georgia. A partial match feature helps when you do not know the full name. You can also search by alias, height, weight, eye color, hair color, scars, and tattoos. The tool covers both active and inactive offenders, so it works for past and present inmates in Georgia.

Results show the inmate's name and year of birth. Known aliases appear too. Physical details like race, gender, height, weight, and scars are listed. The offense, conviction county, sentence length, and release date round out each record. GDC warns that you should verify facts through written mail to Inmate Records at PO Box 1529, Forsyth, GA 31029.

Georgia GDC Mugshot Database

Georgia keeps two paths to the same offender search. The GDC offender info page links to the search form and other tools. The Georgia.gov portal also takes you to the GDC search. Both are free to use. No account is needed.

GDC manages around 51,000 inmates across 35 correctional facilities in Georgia. The database covers state prison inmates. It does not cover county jail inmates. For county jail mugshots in Georgia, go to the sheriff's office website in that county. Many sheriffs post their jail roster online with booking photos. We link to each one on our county pages below.

The search form has two modes. Name and description search lets you type a last name, first name, and add filters. The ID or case number search works if you have the GDC ID already. Mugshots show up when they are on file. The system warns that photos display right away when available, so be ready for that when you run your search for Georgia jail mugshots.

Criminal History Records in Georgia

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation runs the Georgia Crime Information Center. GCIC keeps criminal history records for the whole state. A criminal history record has arrest data, charges, court outcomes, and custody details. This is not the same as a jail mugshot, but both link to the same arrest event in Georgia.

You can get your own criminal history from most sheriff's offices or police departments in Georgia. The GBI FAQ page explains what you need and how to make a request. GCIC processes requests in three to five business days. The office is at 3121 Panthersville Road, Decatur, GA 30034. Call 404-244-2639 for questions about your record.

Attorney requests take five to ten business days. For general criminal history, a person's record includes identification data like name, date of birth, sex, race, height, and weight, plus all arrest and court data on file in Georgia.

Georgia Mugshot Laws

Georgia has strict rules on how jail mugshots can be shared. O.C.G.A. § 35-1-19 bars law enforcement from posting booking photos on websites. The law took effect July 1, 2014. It also blocks agencies from giving mugshots to anyone who plans to post them on a site that charges a fee for removal. Anyone who asks for a booking photo must sign a statement saying they will not use it that way. A false statement is a crime under O.C.G.A. § 16-10-20.

Under O.C.G.A. § 50-18-72, the Georgia Open Records Act lets anyone see public records. But the act limits how booking photos get released. It says that release of booking photographs must follow the rules in § 35-1-19. Initial arrest reports are public in Georgia. Mugshots tied to pending cases have extra limits.

If a mugshot company posts your booking photo and you want it taken down, O.C.G.A. § 10-1-393.5 may help. This law says mugshot sites must remove photos free of charge when the arrest has been restricted or qualifies for restriction. They have 30 days after getting a written request. The Georgia Consumer Protection Division takes complaints when sites do not comply with Georgia mugshot removal rules.

Record restriction is another tool under Georgia law. O.C.G.A. § 35-3-37 lets you ask to have your record restricted if the case was dismissed, not presented to a grand jury, nolle prossed, or ended with no further action. Once restricted, your jail mugshot is no longer available to the public. Guilty pleas and convictions do not qualify for restriction in Georgia. The Reporters Committee Open Government Guide covers these rules in more detail. Copy fees for open records are capped at 10 cents per page under O.C.G.A. § 50-18-71.

Note: Agencies must respond to open records requests within three business days under O.C.G.A. § 50-18-70.
